The Austrian health care system is characterized by nearly unrestricted access for residents and non-residents to contracted providers at all levels of care. The only condition is that the person is enrolled in the country’s compulsory social health insurance. That is, all insured persons are entitled to COVID-19 related care for free. Uninsured persons are legally bound to pay for their health care, except for emergency situations. It is currently not regulated by law if and how the latter regulation would be enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic, for example in case of homeless people (e.g. out-of-pocket payments for testing).
The prerequisite to be subject to obtain a (free) COVID-19 test is to fulfil the criteria described in detail in section 1.5.
