The system provides universal care covering all residents who have been in the country at least for six months. Co-payments for health care are stipulated in the Act no. 112/2018 on the Icelandic health insurance. However, different rules apply in the case of communicable diseases. According to article 11. in Regulation no. 817/2012 issued by the Minister of Health with reference to Act no. 19/1997 on Health Security and Communicable Diseases, article 17, tests, diagnosis, treatments and follow-ups are free of charge for patients.
